Hospital Authority of Albany-Dougherty County

The Hospital Authority of Albany-Dougherty County was created in 1941, and was the first hospital authority created in Georgia under the Hospital Authorities Law.

The nine-member Hospital Authority, appointed by the Dougherty County Commission, was the governing and operating body for Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital until December 1990. At that time, through the terms of a lease, the day to day operation of the hospital was assumed by Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Inc., a Georgia not-for-profit corporation.

The Hospital Authority maintains ownership and oversight responsibility and fiduciary supervision of the assets of the hospital. All control and operational responsibility for the assets reverts to the Authority upon termination of the lease.

Serving Our Community

The Authority, as a creature of the State of Georgia, plays a vital role in connection with intergovernmental transfers involving the state's Indigent Care Trust Fund and other fiscal matters involving Phoebe. It plays a vital role, through the lease, in carrying out the original mission of the hospital to serve the healthcare needs of all citizens in our community regardless of station in life or ability to pay.
